Chii
Series: Chobits
Variant: Periwinkle "Bo-Peep" Artbook Version
First Worn: AnimeCentral 2005
Retired?: No
What girl honestly doesn't like Chobits, even a little? At my first
convention I discovered Chobits (before it was licensed in the US) and
I hunted down bootlegs until it was released here. I was trying to pick
a design to do, when I stumbled upon this one in the For Your Eyes Only
Artbook. And it clicked when I realized I had an old bridesmaids dress
I was dying to use for parts.
This dress was salvaged from a bridesmaids
dress (I figured I'd already paid 170 bucks for the fabric, I might
as well right?). So I tore the sucker apart. Gave it a white taffetta
panel to the bodice and made ruffles for the entire outfit from the
same taffetta (hand made ruffles, I am crazy I realize this now). The
skirt was chopped and I split it up the center to create the open curtain
effect. The bottom part of the skirt was used to create the sleeves,
which I drafted a pattern for. They are a pain to keep up, I'm going
to look into some double sided tape for next time. For the time being,
they're kept up by a tie hidden under the armpit and attached to the
top of the sleeve under the arm. The entire thing is trimmed in periwinkle
ribbon around all the edges. I keep saying I want to add more ruffles,
but I don't know if that will ever happen. The eyelets were put in to
tie the skirt apart and they have stood up pretty well through various
wearings.
The petticoat was purchased online and modifyed
(ie ripped apart and sewn together again) to create the lolita-like
shape. The wig was also purchased online from (I now also use it as
my Luna Lovegood wig). The shoes were purchased at DSW, but I hate them.
I need heels to pull off this look, but white heels with a slight platform
(that I can walk in at a con, I'm a klutz) are hard to find. Someday.
I used more ribbon for the necklace, garter and wristbands. I'm a big
tangle at the end of the night... like the wig ;)
The ears are handmade using a pattern I drafted
after searching through various tutorials and modifying them all together
to create a shape I liked. They are made of sheets of white and pink
foam from Michaels and glued together and then glued onto a white headband
lined with periwinkle ribbon. It's a bit hard to hear behind them, but
much easier and more comfortable than the "official" hard
plastic versions. The spools were made from the same foam and I have
to thread the pigtails into them but they look perfect together.
I love this outfit. I think it is my favorite
cosplay, still. I feel so girly and happy in it. :) I've also worn this
to Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World and got
recognized the moment I stepped into the part by a fellow otaku. Yay!
I also wore it while I was working on it without the ears as a Miss
Muffet costume for a party (pictures in the non-cosplay gallery).
